You're walking, and you're approaching a bog. You make a choice. The blueberries are bluer than ever before.

The bog is the borderland of human power – a field for negotiations, meetings and confrontations. The bog has been cleared, burned, plowed and blasted. Drained.

SWAMP – Walking Within the Frame is a site-specific walking performance that brings nature and technology together. It takes place in the Sanginjoki Nature Reserve, on marshland that was previously used for forestry and is now being restored – one shovelful at a time.

The performance begins with a bus ride from the Valve Culture Centre in Oulu, which takes you to the wet forest of Sanginjoki. There, the performance continues outside in the bog and forest, where the participants move both together and individually, guided by a mobile phone, until the journey leads back to Oulu.

In collaboration with Reality Research Centre, we invite you on a sensory journey into the depths of the bog; to be surprised, to live and to sink. Who is in charge, and how are power relations negotiated when the bog, the participant and the mobile phone meet?

Practical information and accessibility

The performance is not fully accessible, since parts of it take place in forests and marshes, in demanding terrain.

The performance starts in the cafeteria at the Valve Culture Centre (Hallituskatu 7, Oulu), from where we travel by bus to the Sanginjoki Nature Reserve. The bus trip is part of the performance.

No special technological skills are required, but participation requires that one can read and hear information from the performance's phone during the event.

Please wear rubber boots and dress appropriately for the weather. The performance is weather dependent.

Total duration is four (4) hours.
